Buhari dashes South-East leaders hope over appeal for Nnamdi Kanu’s release

President Buhari may have dashed the expectations of South-East leaders over their request for the release of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) Nnamdi Kanu.

The South-East leaders had in November 2021, paid a visit to Buhari in Abuja, where they begged him to grant Kanu amnesty.

They had hoped that the president would oblige their request in order to diffuse ongoing tension in the South-East over Kanu’s travail.

However, the President, in an interview with Channels Television, which was aired on Wednesday, January 5, 2022, said he “wouldn’t dare interfere with the judiciary,” in the trial of the IPOB leader.

The Buhari administration is currently prosecuting Kanu, whose group are demanding the Republic of Biafra, on charges of treasonable felony.
